What I Do
I take on organizations at the point where the old model has stopped working and the new one hasn't been built yet. That has meant leading an organization with a balance sheet of more than $25 million through a sell-side transaction and a full operational rebuild, chairing a foundation that assumes environmental liabilities other organizations can't carry, and sitting as an independent director where fiduciary duty runs to employee-owners. The work is consistent even when the sector isn't: figure out what the organization is actually for, decide what it can afford, and build something that outlasts the decision.
Board & Governance
I serve as an independent director and board chair across an ESOP company, a nonprofit foundation, and a national research network — and I work inside executive, governance, and finance committees as a sitting CEO. Boards facing succession, ownership transition, valuation oversight, or a balance sheet decision they haven't had to make before are where I'm most useful.
Turnaround & Transition Leadership
I have twice been handed an organization in difficulty and asked to stabilize it. At KINBER I came in as interim CEO, executed a sell-side transaction of network assets during the height of COVID, rebuilt the leadership team, and grew revenue 21%. That's the work I'm best at: arriving when the situation is unresolved and leaving behind something durable.
Acquisition & Independent Sponsor
Through Golden Road Enterprises, I source, structure, and lead acquisitions of lower-middle-market businesses in Pennsylvania and the Mid-Atlantic — and operate them afterward. Permanent capital, no fund clock, no forced exit.
Infrastructure & Regulated Industries
My career has been spent where capital, regulation, and long-lived infrastructure intersect. At KINBER I oversaw the operation and eventual sale of a 2,000-plus-mile fiber optic network spanning 47 Pennsylvania counties, taking the transaction through approvals from the Pennsylvania PUC, the Pennsylvania Attorney General, CFIUS, and the U.S. Department of Commerce's NTIA. I then built KeystoneREN LLC to keep research and education connectivity running after the sale, and I continue to oversee its PUC, FCC, and Pennsylvania Department of Revenue obligations. Earlier, as Deputy Secretary at Pennsylvania DCNR, I oversaw infrastructure for 120 state parks and deployed $35M in grant capital annually. The common thread: understanding what a long-lived asset actually costs, and what it takes to get a regulator to say yes.
Rooted in Pennsylvania
My roots run from Clearfield County to Lancaster County, and the work I take on tends to be where I live. Whether it's reclaiming industrial sites through the Natural Streams Foundation or supporting an employee-owned engineering firm like ELA Group, I'm drawn to organizations trying to build something that lasts longer than the people running it.
